Josh Perelson
I grew up in the small town of Mill Valley, just north of San Francisco,
Ca. The first experience I can remember playing with clay was watching
my mother and a friend throwing a pot on a potters wheel when I was about 4. I
was hooked from the first moment I placed my hands into the clay and
began to create and explore.
My journey into becoming a ceramic artist has been an interesting
one. In high school and college I saw clay as a fun, relaxing and
enjoyable activity to get my mind off of all the stresses that I was
creating for myself. Up until my time at UC Santa Barbara I saw clay as
form and function rather than art.

It was not until I took
my first class with Michael Arntz that I discovered the limitless range
of clay as an art form. While my major at UCSB was history my focus and
passion was in the ceramic studio playing and exploring with clay. After
graduating from UCSB and finding a job in the "real word" I found myself
going into clay withdrawals and needed a fix and fast. I found a great
space at Santa Monica College where I was able to satisfy my fix to get
my hands dirty. My time at SMC also gave me the opportunity to explore
my interest in teaching both the technical craft as well as the art of
clay. It was there that I began do develop the idea of opening a studio.
Thus the spawn of Vessel Studio Gallery. |
